the public talk, always after lunch on the sunday was always the big (though boring) event.
the chairman sat on the stage all the time whilst the speaker for the hour long talk droned on.
The cong started laughing... I had tears rolling down my face... The other kids on the platform were just staring at me!

I remember a story of a CA where a platform man had to come on to adjust a mike or something. There was a small thin hedge of plants at the front of the platform so he thought he would be unobtrusive by crawling on his hands and knees to do the job. Didn't work. - hilarious!
i am considering going to a therapist.
even though i believe i have gotten better and made some progress (it has been roughly a year since i stopped attending meetings, doing anything jw-wise), i still have a lot of negative self-talk which is hard to overcome, especially during off days like today.. i find the hardest things for me is low self-esteem and social interactions/anxiety.
i'm sure some of you can sympathsize, and though i am not fully blaming my issues soley to my jw upbring (born-in) i know it compounded those issues.. .
CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) is amazing. It doesn't send you off to your distant past/relationship with your father/mother/great uncle etc. but give you a handle on how to control your thinking process. I was truly amazed at how easily it rid me of behaviours that had previously blighted my life.
Everyone is different but I would say that some pits are just too difficult to get out of on your own, you need a rope. Just make sure you get a good one.

On this occasion my dad was the chairman. He sat on the stage for the whole hour and fell sound asleep. He didn't wake up until the applause signified the end of the talk.
There are many others, perhaps you have a few.

Respectfully . . . it's a slanted viewpoint. You could also say the advantages outweigh the disadvantages in a 'normal' life. In my experience, active JW's see nothing positive in the "world" . . . always picking holes in it . . . when actually there is plenty that is positive. Actually, the advantages of normality most definitely outweigh the disadvantages (if there are any) IMHO.

I have spoken to various members of my family about individual issues and they have always agreed with my standpoint. I talk to my wife a lot, she understands but thinks that the advantages of the "truth" outweigh the disadvantages. She thinks that I have become negative, always picking holes in things, that is of course true. I used to be a positive kind of guy and I think that is my true nature. I have to be careful to give credit where it is due.

Great remark. My take is I wish I was sure of anything as they are about everything. One of the worst aspects is that the Bible is full of truth as much as it is full of unanswerable questions. If you insist on saying you have all the answers you just devalue the whole. A simple admission of lack of understanding would go so far. "We thought we understood what the generation meant but now we don't really know, perhaps we got it wrong", some chance!
